Event Description
Matching your presenter has a million challenges that have to be met at that moment.
Have you ever interpreted for someone who loves the limelight? Someone who is sarcastic, goofy, and loves to be seen and heard?
Have you interpreted for someone who stands as still as a statue, but their voice carries so much emotion you become entranced with their message?
As an interpreter, it can be hard to convey what’s happening. Sometimes we can “over-interpret” or even “under-interpret”.
In a hearing world, we are able to see, hear, and comprehend what is being presented by utilizing many senses. But take hearing out of the equation, what’s missed? The rise and fall of a deep voice. Silly “ahem”s following a sarcastic joke.
This workshop will be interactive on how to approach different scenarios.
Educational Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- demonstrate holding presented information to allow the Deaf/hard of hearing attendees to experience visuals in real time.
- recall what to do on the job if presenters banter with them and how to include the Deaf/hard of hearing attendees.
- assess how and when to use your body, space, and facials to convey multiple emotions.

About Our Presenter(s):
Peige Turner is my name and NERDterpreting is my game. I’m a freelance interpreter (MICS 4) in the Kansas City area. I attended the ITP program at Maple Woods Community College in 1998 and little did I know, I found a community I never wanted to leave. I have a passion for people, which often lands me in unique environments. I love collecting new vocabulary from experiences and adding what I learned to my tool bag. Working as an interpreter out in the community is one of my favorite things, but teaching unique material to build on skills is a newfound passion. With every experience, comes acquired knowledge. My goal in teaching workshops is to get interpreters comfortable in unique situations for the fun of it. Remember, if it’s FUN, we should sign it!
